My life pivoted when my 90-year old mother (Moo) suffered a stroke. A stroke that left her unable to swallow. The time came to tell her she needed a feeding tube - I sat down next to her.
"Mom, you are unable to swallow and you need a feeding tube."
He eyes looked straight into me, "Can I taste the food?"
Confused I managed, "What?"
"Will I be able to taste the food?", her eyes still locked on me.
I looked away, down, and back to her, "No"
"I don't want it," she said firmly.
I looked into the locked eyes, away, down, and back to her, "You will d-die."
She shook her head, waved her hands, and looked out the window. No.
I was stunned - what courage. In retrospect, I should not have surprised - we had already talked about her wishes at end of life. I knew that was what she wanted.
Upon reflection, what a metaphor - Taste the Food! Can I taste the food? Do I taste the food?
How often do I scarf down food without tasting it? I forget everyday is an adventure and every moment is an experience. I forget to look and listen. And, I forget to share.
