On Dreams

The new Hotshot at work in Grants, NM

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” --Anais Nin.

On a Tuesday evening two months ago, during my nightly reading and handful of almonds, a friend called.

“Bob’s wife died," her voice was heavyhearted. "She is our age,”

On Wednesday. I had almost finished my reading when my friend called again.

“I am going to buy that place on the water that I have always wanted,” this time her voice was urgent

“Why?” - something had happened.

“Debbie’s boyfriend died in his sleep - age 29,” the heavyheartedness returned.

On Thursday, before I could even start my reading or almonds, the phone rang - my heart jumped - bad news travels in 3s.

Answering, I heard my son blurt out- “IgotthehotshotjobwiththeCarsoncrewinTaos, New Mexico!”

“What? Slow down?” I said, not fully comprehending.

“I got the hotshot job with the Carson crew in Taos, New Mexico!”

“Congratulations!” was all I could muster, but my voice was beaming. For 2 years, I have shared in my son's dream of becoming an elite forest firefighter - a hotshot.

Not much reading in that week of heartbreak and joy. But, 3 phone calls from 2 people with the courage to chase their dreams.

How about you? When have you chased a dream? Share a story?
